When a Death Occurs

In the first hours after a death, most families don't know who to call or what comes first. Here is what to expect, and how we can help from the very first call.

Who to call first

If the death happens at home and was not expected, call 911. If your loved one was under hospice care, call the hospice nurse first. If the death happens in a hospital or care facility, the staff will make the first notifications. Then call us at (678) 217-4667. We answer 24 hours a day and will arrange to bring your loved one into our care.

Take a moment for your family

Very little needs to be decided in the first hour. Let close family and friends know, and give yourselves time to be together. We will explain the next steps when you are ready.

Information to gather

When you meet with us, it helps to have your loved one's full legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, parents' names, and military discharge papers if they served. If they made any plans in advance, bring those too.
