The lump-sum death payment
A one-time payment of $255 may be paid to a surviving spouse, or to a child who qualifies, if certain requirements are met. It must be applied for within two years of the death.
Survivor benefits
Widows, widowers, dependent children and in some cases dependent parents may qualify for monthly survivor benefits. Contact Social Security or visit ssa.gov to find out what your family is eligible for.
